Stanley Kubrick @ LACMA + Break is almost over, but I got pancakes

Break is coming to an end, and all is sad, but hey, the world didn’t end and that means I am glad to get back into the groove again! Plus, today, I reacquainted myself with BLD’s awesome Blueberry Ricotta Pancakes. Heavenly. It was just…heavenly.

After being able to settle down and watch Lord of the Rings on repeat (that’s when I feel like myself again), I think it’s time for me to talk about how amazing I thought the Kubrick Exhibition at LACMA was. But also, actually, before getting into that, I need to briefly mention how exciting it was to finally see Graphic Design: Now in Production @ the Hammer. Gonna place my order for the book soon, which I heard is actually more insightful than the exhibition itself, given that it’s rich with essays and well, unlike the exhibition, it’s something that you can keep.

I’m gonna give a short and sweet one on the Kubrick exhibition. Going in, I’ve watched a majority of the movies, but still, it’s my goal to be able to watch all of Kubrick’s pieces of genius so then I can call myself a true Kubrick fan :D. Walking in, I loved that I was first hit by a variety of lenses he used, but the graphic designer in me was really swept away by what I’m tempted to call a “monument” of movie posters featuring Kubrick’s oeuvre. It was pretty much similar to Arclight Cinemas’ large wall of posters (except, not backlit—just framed).

Overall, my favorite part of the exhibition are the rooms which featured 2001: Space Odyssey and the Shining. I mean everything down to the lighting was spot-on—but most importantly, being able to see all that went into making the film, from the raw scripts to the props—it’s breathtaking. Props that looked small in real life looked like they went through a make-over once Kubrick so gloriously captured them on screen.

I’m gonna avoid posting the gazillion pictures that I took while I was there so you can actually go (if you have not yet) and experience it for yourself…it is so worth the $20. Plus, that $20 gets you into the Caravaggio show too (I promise I don’t work for LACMA). C’mon, two geniuses for a small fee. Even a girl on a student budget is telling you that it was worth it for a girl on a student budget!

Ok, back to the graphic designer in me thing. Saul Bass and Kubrick had exchanges about the logo Bass was doing for Kubrick. It was one of the juiciest thing I’ve read all year long. Even Beyonce having a baby couldn’t live up to the juiciness of Kubrick giving crit to the legendary Saul Bass. I feel like a fly on the wall at a fancy party (as fancy as the masquerade in Phantom of the Opera). Now I feel like holding up some fragile china with my pinky out (ref: Spongebob episode where he goes to Sandy’s house not knowing she lives breathing on air and Patrick is outside the glass igloo advising Spongebob to hold out his pinky.). Btw, check out Saul Bass’s signature. Adorbs.

Ok, this is just a pic of the letter that was attached to the 5 or so variations on the Shining logo which Saul Bass worked on. The logo variations with little notes of constructive crit by Kubrick scribbled on the sides will not be posted here, just so you can seriously go and see them for yourself in real life! Googling them is one thing, but seeing them framed and having them only a few inches away from your face is another!

Anyhow, hope you enjoyed this entry! For now, it’s time for me to hibernate a little more before school starts up again…
